Written by: Patrick Oborn - Jan 7, 2009 How does the largest software giant in the word increase revenue? That is the billion-dollar question facing planners at Microsoft. As the market leader in operating system software with a market share of 95%, it becomes difficult to generate revenue while almost every PC on this planet is already running some version of Windows. The answer? High-speed internet access (MSN DSL) and video games (XBOX). Wether by luck or by plan, Microsoft was able to hold off on their plans to become and ISP until -after- the dot-com crash, allowing Microsoft to purchase network capacity for pennies on the dollar. Coupled with Mircosoft's unequalled ability to repeat sell to their customers, MSN DSL was quick to pick up it's first batch of customers. Since the initial launch in 2002, MSN DSL has built out it's portal to rival that of AOL, complete with it's own version of Instant Messanger, Spam-Filetered Email, and Parental Controls. Leave it to Microsoft to dominate any computer-related field it sets in its sights. |
